Professor of strategy and customer experience management

David Jakabovic

Now a yacht broker, David fondly remembers his time at IUM, emphasizing the international exposure.

“Every single person in my class came from a different country, which helped me understand different cultural backgrounds and business approaches.”

He highlights key skills needed in the industry:

“It’s not just about negotiation skills, trust, and commitment, but also being organized and able to work under high pressure. And be passionate of what you do”

On challenges, he notes that the yachting industry is affected by geopolitical and economic factors, but there are emerging markets with untapped potential. His advice to students entering the industry:

“Find your niche and focus on a specific segment or region that you know better than anyone else.”

He credits IUM for opening doors in the industry, as he secured an internship during his master’s, which played a crucial role in his career.

Iliyana Popova

Iliyana highlights the practical approach of the Master’s in Luxury Management.

Now the founder of Ilos Decor, a company specializing in luxury home and yacht styling, transforms clients’ visions into personalized dream environments.

“Entrepreneurs guided us throughout our educational journey, and we had the opportunity to do internships, case studies, and teamwork, which really developed our cooperation skills.

Regarding challenges in the yachting industry, she mentions the misconceptions about its reputation and the industry’s efforts in sustainability and new technologies. Another challenge is the lack of talent, as many are unaware of opportunities in the field.

Both Iliyana and David agree that the Yachting specialization at IUM provides exceptional industry access, allowing students to build strong networks and develop expertise in this niche sector.

Monaco: The Global Hub of Luxury Yachting

Thanks to its strategic location in Monaco, IUM offers students unparalleled access to industry events, such as the Monaco Yacht Show, as well as a vast network of professionals and leading companies in the sector. This direct exposure to the industry allows students to immerse themselves fully in the world of yachting and build professional relationships from the very start of their academic journey.

With this initiative, the International University of Monaco reaffirms its commitment to delivering educational programs tailored to industry needs, preparing students for successful careers in dynamic and competitive sectors.
